Portugal Ocean in Motion 2015 Film Schedule

 

We are pleased to announce a special screening of the Ocean in Motion Film Festival in Cascais Portugal June 4th through June 6th! Join us for three nights of exciting ocean films taking you from the bottom of the ocean to the tops of waves to the ends of the earth.  For more information, click here to the Gulbenkian Foundation site.   Tickets for June 4th and 6th at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, each at 7:00pm (19:00), with doors opening at 6:15pm.     Shows on June 5th and 6th will be in Cascais, with a free show on the 6th.  Tickets for the events at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation can be purchased online at this link    We hope to se you there!

Also, for those of you who like to get wet, join us at the Swim Challenge Cascais, "Swim for the Ocean" in honour of World Ocean Day.  This race is part of the World Open Water Swimming Series, and will be preceeded with the new Ocean Parade along the Cascais waterfront, pre-race, at 8:15am on Sunday the 7th of June.

This graphical animation talks about plastic and its impacts on wildlife, the ocean, and our health, and what needs to be done to slow the threat of plastic pollution.

Baja's Secret Miracle

Baja’s Secret Miracle tells the story of Mario Castro, a fisherman that decided to change the destiny of his community. The film takes us on a journey of decades, to understand how the town of Cabo Pulmo, Mexico created the world’s most robust marine reserve.

A história de Mário Castro, um pescador que decidiu mudar o destino da sua comunidade. Este filme mostra-nos como – durante várias décadas - a cidade de Cabo Pulmo, México, foi criando a reserva marinha mais robusta do mundo. 


Ocean Gravity

This is a film about a free diver, and him floating in the ocean currents, along a wall, and at the bottom, using ocean gravity as his medium for expression.

Este filme é sobre um mergulhador livre. Utilizando a gravidade do oceano como meio de expressão, esta curta metragem mostra como o mergulhador flutua nas correntes do mar, ao longo de uma parede e na parte inferior do oceano.


The Clean Cross Swim, Scubazoo, 18 min

The Clean Cross Swim is about the record breaking swim by Simon Holliday across the Pearl River Delta, from Lantau Island to Macau, in May, 2014.  The swim was to raise awareness for ocean protection, and includes a beautiful scene with Chinese White Dolphins that were encountered during the crossing.

Este filme é sobre a travessia do Delta do Rio das Pérolas,   entre a ilha de Lantau e Macau,feita a nadopor Simon Holliday em Maio de 2014.O objetivo era aumentar a sensibilidade em torno da proteção do oceano e o filme inclui uma cena fantástica com Golfinhos Brancos Chineses vistos durante a travessia.


Semporna Shark Sanctuary, Cara Morrison and Scubazoo, 8 min

The importance of sharks to the natural environment of the Semporna Shark Sanctuary, how they impact the reef (in a good way), and how the local economy supports this park location.

Esta curta metragem fala-nos sobre a importância que os tubarões têm sobre o meio ambiente natural do Santuário de Tubarõesde Semporna – como afetam o recife (de forma positiva) e como a economia local apoia a localização deste parque.

Saving Our Tuna, United Nations Development Program, 23 min

More than 4.5 million tons of tuna are caught each year as part of a $5 billion industry that is an economic lifeline for Pacific island countries. But for how much longer?

Saving our Tuna, takes you to the richest fishing grounds on the planet, where fleets of fishing vessels equipped with sonar, and sophisticated satellite tracking devices are catching millions of tons of tuna, making it the third most harvested fish in the ocean. The race is on to see if technology can also help save a commodity that is a way of life for so many. Harvest rates have been increasing dramatically over the last decade, placing pressure on a resource that is vital as a food source and an important means of livelihood.  

 

Mais de 4.5 milhões de toneladas de atum são pescadas todos os anos. Isto faz parte duma indústria que vale $5 bilhões e que serve como sustento económico para muitas ilhas no Pacífico.  Será que isto é sustentável?

 

Este filme leva-nos às zonas de pesca mais ricas do mundo, onde frotas de navios pesqueiros equipados com sonar e dispositivos de localização por satélite pescam milhões de toneladas de atum, tornando-o no terceiro peixe mais colhido do oceano. Vamos ver se a tecnologia também poderá ajudar a salvar esta mercadoria que para tantos é um modo de vida. A pesca de atum tem aumentado drásticamente ao longo da última década, colocando enorme pressão num recurso que é vital como fonte de alimento e modo de viver para tantas pessoas. 

Still Swell at 85, Dean Saffron, 4 min

The nickname Magoo conjures up images of a well-intentioned, but incapable character, bumbling through life’s daily adventures, even for those too young to have been exposed to the iconic cartoon.   While Barry ‘Magoo” McGuigan is a lovable spirit, this is where the similarity ends, as being Australia’s oldest competitive surfer generates extreme focus.  This short piece explores Magoo’s perception of being involved with surfing since the advent of the sport and the deeply personal ways that surfing has shaped his philosophy to life.  Unassuming in nature, Magoo is a man of few words, but his message is profound.  

Barry “Magoo” McGuigan é o surfista federado mais antigo da Austrália, estando ligado ao surf desde que o desporto surgiu.  Este pequeno filme explora a sua percepção e filosofia de vida, que  foi totalmente moldada por este desporto radical. Magoo é um homem de poucas palavras mas a sua mensagem é profunda.

St. Paul’s village on Moa Island celebrates not only the first Puppet Show of it's kind in the Torres Strait, but the first puppet show ever made out of ghost nets and marine debris.
