Environmental Conflict Resolution Lecture
In 2013, as part of the HK-SF International Ocean Film Festival, Ocean Recovery Alliance present the first in a series of Environmental Conflict Resolution lectures, in association with HK University.

Last year's lecture was presented by Kathleen C Wallace, J.D., LL.M and it drew attention to many aspects of waste management and the approaches that can be used when tackling the complex issues of the environment; more specifically, it highlighted how collaboration is vital when attempting to resolve these problems.

Kathleen (Kacie) Wallace is a conflict resolution specialist with over twenty years of
experience as a crisis intervention counselor, arbitrator, negotiator, and mediator. She
is a Law Professor and Supervising Attorney for the Dispute Resolution Institute at
North Carolina Central University School of Law. She is an Adjunct Professor at the
Duke University - North Carolina Rotary Center for International Studies in Peace &
Conflict Resolution and Duke University School of Law.

Kacie earned a B.A. Degree in Art Design from Duke University, a J.D. from North Carolina Central University, a LL.M. in dispute resolution from Pepperdine University, and a Certificate in Documentary Studies from Duke University. She is a licensed attorney and certified mediator with the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission and Industrial Commission. She is the Principal of Interplay Resolutions and mediates a broad range of disputes including personal injury, workers’ compensation, environmental, harassment, employment, and sports. She is a mediator with the North Carolina Academy of Superior Court Mediators, the National Academy of Distinguished Mediators, and the United States Olympic Committee
(USOC), and served as the Ombudsman for the USOC at the 2011 Para PanAm Games and the 2012 Paralympic Games. She represents the Ocean Recovery Alliance as an ocean ambassador and competes in endurance open water sports to raise awareness about ocean health and sustainability.

This lecture will highlight various approaches to addressing conflicts involving complex environmental
issues such as the management of natural resources, protected areas, pollution, and endangered species. Particular attention will be given to collaborative problem-solving approaches that engage diverse stakeholders to create positive, mutually beneficial, and comprehensively sound results. Professor Wallace will examine cases where environmental conflict resolution processes have been applied to intractable conflicts and enabled agreements between governments, corporations, and public interest groups, as well as cases where conservation and cooperation in multi-jurisdictional areas have contributed to peace-building.
A brief introduction on the Hong Kong marine environment will be offered by Dr. Andy Cornish. This is the first of a series of “Environmental Conflict Resolution” events jointly organized by the HKU LL.M. in Arbitration & Dispute Resolution Program and the NGO Ocean Recovery Alliance.
